Jorja Schofield is empowering girls in STEM

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

Gender stereotypes in STEM are being challenged, and we are seeing a new generation of young girls who are not letting their passion for STEM stop them.

International Women's Day 2023 is all about Cracking the Code: Innovation for a Gender Equal Future. As part of our celebration of International Women's Day, LJ Future Skills is sharing stories of amazing women in the STEM industry who are letting their passion for STEM drive their career.

We start off our inspiration series with Jorja Schofield who is driven to start Cracking the Code and innovating the future with her commitment and dedication to STEM. And she is motivating many other girls to pursue their passion for STEM.

Jorja Schofield, Young Australian of the Year 2023 Port Macquarie-Hastings, School Captain at Hastings Secondary College (Westport Campus)

One cannot help but admire and respect Jorja Schofield for her contributions to her school and community through her advocacy of STEM studies and careers for girls. She is a young leader whose passion for STEM shows in everything she does.

At 13, she competed in the international FIRST Robotics Competition in Houston, Texas, as a member of the Colleges’ robotics team, which won the Australian Championships. Jorja has also spoken in Port Macquarie at the Luminosity Summit for Young People on leadership and gender prejudices inhibiting girls from pursuing careers in science.

Jorja is now in Year 12 and is the School Captain at Hastings Secondary College (Westport Campus) where she mentors younger students in robotics and more importantly, nurturing their interest in STEM by sharing her drive and passion for STEM with them.

She is on a mission to close the gender gap and she is doing her part to boost the level of representation of girls and women in STEM studies and careers. One of her big plans for this year is to start a STEM group for girls in her school. Jorja wants to inspire young girls to take up opportunities in STEM, to push past boundaries and do great things.

"Just do it! Don't listen to people who put you down. If someone says I can't do it, it makes me want to do it more! I have this fire in my belly and I'm going to prove the naysayers wrong!"

Jorja basically lives, eats and breathe STEM. And that's no surprise, seeing how STEM is present in our everyday lives. To step forward into the future and continue to innovate, we need STEM more than ever.
