We asked Li Jiang, the Master for 21st Century Education, “How do I give myself the best chance at being successful?”
Li Jiang says, "whether you are studying Mathematics, Science, Economics, History, or any number of other disciplines, a particular mindset is required to be successful in the 21st Century.
Let's dig in and find out what 21st Century Skills are required to be successful
21st century skills are a set of abilities that students need to develop in order to succeed in the information age. The Skills are grouped into three types:
Learning Skills:
Critical Thinking
Creative Thinking
Collaborating
Communicating
Literacy Skills:
Information Literacy
Media Literacy
Technology Literacy
Life Skills:
Flexibility
Initiative
Social Skills
Productivity
Leadership
These skills have always been important for students, though they are particularly important in our information-based economy. In able to get and hold job in current industry, students need to have some other skills, such as knowing a trade, following directions, getting along with others, working hard, and being professional - efficient, prompt, honest, and fair.
To hold information-age jobs, though, students also need to think deeply about issues, solve problems creatively, work in teams, communicate clearly in many media, learn ever- changing technologies, and deal with a flood of information. The rapid changes in our world require students to be flexible, to take the initiative and lead when necessary, and to produce something new and useful.
We've mentioned these skills too in our previous article - LJ Future Skills is creating innovators for Australia's future in STEM
Lifelong Learning
In the old days, change was slower. What we learnt from school was valuable for a long period of time. By now, what we know would outdate very quickly. What we learnt is important, but not as important as how fast we can learn, change and adapt to new knowledge. Hence, education should teach students more lifelong learning abilities to handle the fast pace of change.
Lifelong learning may be broadly defined as learning that is pursued throughout life: learning that is flexible, diverse and available at different times and in different places. Lifelong learning crosses sectors, promoting learning beyond traditional schooling and throughout adult life.
This definition is based on four ‘pillars’ of education for the future.
1. Learning to know
Mastering learning tools rather than acquisition of structured knowledge.
2. Learning to do
Equipping people for the types of work needed now and in the future including innovation and adaptation of learning to future work environments.
3. Learning to live together, and with others
Peacefully resolving conflict, discovering other people and their cultures, fostering community capability, individual competence and capacity, economic resilience, and social inclusion.
4. Learning to be
Education contributing to a person’s complete development: mind and body, intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic appreciation and spirituality.
MASTER Learning to Learn
With lifelong learning, learning to learn correctly becomes crucial. Li Jiang shares his MASTER Methodologies to become an effective MASTER learner. These are described from page 71 of his eBook "The MASTER for 21st Century Education".
“M” stands for “Management”
“A” stands for “Attitudes”
“S” stands for “Skills”
“T” stands for “Technology”
“E” stands for “Effort”
“R” stands for “Review”
Since education has moved to student-centered learning, training oneself in study skills has gradually become as important as learning the knowledge itself. MASTER can be used as a training guide for students to improve their self- study abilities, adequately preparing them for a lifetime of learning.
The best way to learn the MASTER is:
Always remember that the six MASTER components are bound together and must be used together
Practice and practice, as often as you can
Keep trying to improve, no matter how small or slow your
steps forward may seem
Try to turn your application of MASTER into a habit
We find the MASTER Methodologies fascinating. There are many common sense practices put together in a very structured manner. MASTER is a general model for all studies. You can use it to build different skill sets for different subjects.
We encourage Parents and Students to download his eBook "The MASTER for 21st Century Education".
